Dean Kutzler is an Amazon bestselling author of thriller novels and more currently science fiction with the Scarab Reign series.
A north-easterner all his life, Dean currently resides in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia where he writes his novels from the dining room table, looking out at the wildlife from the Delaware River. He used to be an accounting controller until he decided to pursue the dream and write full-time in 2012.
As an avid reader from a young age, Dean grew up reading Stephen King, Dean Koontz, John Saul, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, J. R. R. Tolkien, Phillip K. Dick, to name a few. His tastes in TV programs are as eclectic as his reading choices watching shows like Star Trek, Buck Rodgers, Battlestar Galactica, The Avengers (Diana Rig aka Mrs. Peel is his idol), The Outer Limits, The Twilight Zone, Dark Shadows, and more. Recently, he has relived his past rewatching all those shows on Netflix.
Dean writes a lot of fast-paced, high-concept fiction that readers have said to be rooted deeply in believability by his realistic characters. He loves "wowing" readers with twists and his work has quoted as "having more twists than fusilli pasta!"

The unofficial bio
Okay, now that the stuffiness of the official bio is out of the way, let's get down to the nitty-gritty. My parents, Mom in particular, always encouraged my creativity. When I was five, she sat me down with my Snoopy doll (yes, I am a voracious lover of all things Peanuts) and gave me a pad and pencil. She said that my grandmother had a talent for drawing, and she wanted to see if I had the same gift. So, I proved it to be true. At five-years-old, I drew a very good likeness of Snoopy. I can still see in my mind's eye the proud surprise on Mom's face.
As I grew up, I learned that I was really good at recreating any comics I saw, but not so good at creating my own. My heart just wasn't in it. I also tried my hand at oil painting, and I wasn't half-bad, but as with drawing painting really wasn't my passion. Later on in life, I learned that if your passion isn't in it, then you shouldn't be doing it, but we'll get to that.
I shared my mother's love of reading, and we often went to the library. She loved Agatha Christie, and I loved Stephen King. She never censored my book choices (or TV shows), and I think that was a significant, positive influence in my development as a person. So, at a young age, I was reading about Jack Torrance chasing his wife and child around with an ax!
Now, reading that kind of material didn't cause me to grow up to be a Jack Torrance (*insert side-eye.) But it did peak my interest in writing. I was fascinated at how a person's words written on a page could pull you into another world and twist your emotions around. So I began writing stories. My very first tale was called The Squirrel, illustrations included.
Once high school came around, any notions of creative writing got pushed aside, and I was encouraged to focus on getting a proper job, which I did. (We're getting to that part about passion I wrote about earlier.) I got an Accounting degree and worked as an accounting controller for many years. It was a good-paying job, but it sucked the life out of me, stressed me to no end, and worst of all...I felt that what I was doing had no purpose other than to pay the bills.
I lived this way until 2012 when I decided I could no longer let my life slip away without at least trying to pursue my dreams of becoming a writer. With the help of my partner, I made the decision to quit the soul-sucking day job and start writing. It took me four years to write my first novel, Brownstone, but it became an Amazon bestseller within the first month of publication. You can read the news article HERE. My mother would have been so proud of me if she had been alive. I also held a book signing in the very same library that she and I used to visit every week. If I die today, that moment will be the one that made my life complete.
After Brownstone, I wrote another novel in the Jack Elliot Thriller series called The Harrowing of Hell. This time, it only took me six months! I was getting better and faster. I have plans for more novels in that series to come, but I had an epiphany. It was as if lightning struck me! All my life, I've watched sci-fi shows like Star Trek, Buck Rodgers, The Twilight Zone, Battlestar Galactic, etc. I've also read all the books--I absolutely love the genre! So, why not write my own?
In 2018, I wrote two books in the Scarab Reign series titled, Kahari (Book 1) and Erebus (Book 2.) Readers love the series, so I've got more books planned as well. Protogenoi will be the third, and I hope to have it out before Christmas.
